This year’s grain harvesting in Russia is faster than it was in the previous years on the average, an official at the Agriculture Ministry’s press service told Itar-Tass on Tuesday. As of July 17, Russian farmers harvested about 17 million tonnes of grain from 5.7 million hectares, which is 3.1 million tonnes more than in 2006, the official said, adding, Russia’s average yield of grain amounted to 29.2 centners per hectare, which is 3.2 centners per hectare smaller than in 2006. Russian Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev pointed again to the fast pace of this year’s grain harvesting in the country, the official said. “Currently, the country has sufficient resources of food grain,” the minister stressed. On Monday, the minister forecasted this year’s gross grain harvest to make about 76 million tonnes with due account weather conditions and harvesting pace, the ministerial official said. In Gordeyev’s words, “This amount of grain will help Russia to meet its demand for grain and to keep the country’s grain exports potential at 10 million tonnes.” At present, the harvesting is the most intensive in the Stavropol territory, the official said. Farmers of the Stavropol Territory collected five million tonnes of grain from 1.6 million hectares, which is 0.4 million hectares more than in the last year. The grain yield amounted to 32.0 centners per hectare, the official said. In the Krasnodar Territory, farmers harvested 6.3 million tonnes of grain, which is 2 million tonnes of grain more than in same period of 2006. The grain crops were collected from 1.4 million hectares, the official said, adding, the grain yield amounted to 44.8 centners per hectare (or 1.6 centners per hectare more than in 2006). In the Rostov region, grain growers harvested 3.1 million tonnes of grain with the average yield of 20 centners per hectare, the official said. Farmers of the Volgograd region collected 1.2 million tonnes of grain from 682,000 hectares of territories under winter crops, the official said, adding, the grain yield amounts to 17.0 centners per hectare. In the Belgorod region, farmers garnered in 120,000 tonnes of grain from 43,300 hectares with the average yield of 25.9 centners per hectare, the official said. In the Voronezh region, the gross grain harvest made up 260,000 tonnes with the average yield of 18 centners per hectare. Farmers of the Saratov region collected about 241,000 tonnes of grain from 123,000 hectares with the yield of 19.6 centners per hectare, the official said.
